John 1:9

I haven't written about John lately, so here I am trying to get back in the swing of things. We are on John 1:9.

John 1:9 says, 'The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.'

Let's look at this verse in the 3 sections that it comes it.

1st - 'The true light,...'

true = is the greek word 'alethinos' and it means = that which has not only the name and resemblance, but the real nature corresponding to the name, in every respect corresponding to the idea signified by the name, real, true genuine.

It means the opposite of fictitious, counterfeit, imaginary, simulated or pretended. It does mean true, veracious, sincere.

light = greek word 'phos' = lights that is emitted, heavenly light, pure, brilliant quality, that which is exposed to view, openly or publicly.

So we have this real, true, not fake light that can be seen and is pure.

Ok..the next part.

2nd - '...,which enlightens everyone,...'

enlighens = greek word 'fotizo' = to give light, to shine, light up, illumine.

everyone = greek word 'Anthropos' = a human being

So the true light is also defined by being for everyone and not only that it is active in everyone. It is a light that makes people shine.

3rd part - '...,was coming into the world.'

word = greek word is 'kosmos' = the earth, the inhabitants of the earth, the human family

I take this to mean that as a human race we tend to divide ourselves, but in all reality we all have things in common. That one source has poured into all our lives.

A good example that I can think of is when I have been on trips to 3rd world countries. Even though I have been to places where I can't speak their language, one thing that is always understood is a smile or a kind gesture. I have been with people and shared wonderful moments of laughter with them even though we can't verbally communicate. This is where I see the light that is in all of us. These moments that bond people, like when people banded together after 9/11. Often in the face of tragedy we see life for what it really is. It's so precious and sacred, but we often over look relationships with others and we try to isolate ourselves. We often look for the bad in people and we miss the fact that all of us have been poured into by God.

Some even don't like that idea, that God gives us light or that he has created us. We often want to stand on our own two feet and we want to be left alone, but that's impossible. God will always be there and sometimes he blesses people that don't acknowledge him or even hate him. This just shows the type of God that we were created by. A God that is active in our lives in a positive way, even if we don't want him to be. He gives us what we need and it is in every human being. No one is ever too far from God that he can't see you. He will always be able to enlighten you and to lift you up.

The last part is the best, because it means that God (the true light) was physically coming into our world. God has always poured himself into all people, but he is now physically going to come and SHOW us what true light looks like. This is why I try to follow Christ. I follow him because I believe that his example that he left on earth is the best possible way to live. That his example was perfect and that if I want true joy, true love, true happiness, that I must walk like he did. He came to show us how to live the way God intends us to live. I mess this up every single day, but I am trying to be more like him every single day. This is the direction my life is pointed and I will journey in that direction until the day I die, because it's the best way and I don't want anything less that the best for my life and for my family!
